These three items have the most effect on the cost of your kitchen remodel:
SIZE
SCOPE OF WORK
SELECTIONS
You, the buyer, have the most price control over these three items when getting a quote for a kitchen project. Yes, even size, because you can choose to go bigger, smaller, or stay the same, and each choice has an impact on cost.
Side note: You might be asking yourself why the cost varies between companies? Check out this article to see why different companies cost different amounts.

Scope of work is defined: A projects specific tasks and deliverables, or more simply what IS and IS NOT included in the remodeling Agreement signed between you (buyer) and contractor you choose.
Scope of work varies tremendously between each project and person and it's why most contractors when asked the question, “what does a kitchen remodel cost?” will answer with “It depends”.
Think of Scope of Work as a wide range of choices with the left side being minimal changes to the home and the right being changes to everything, with the ability to select anywhere in the middle by adding or removing line items.
Let's take the myriad choices and group them into 3 distinct categories that are easier to digest.
Re - new
Re - invigorate
Re-Imagine
-
This is a project where you are happy with the floors, paint, and general layout of cabinets and walls. Essentially you want a new kitchen without getting into too much. This is an extremely cost-effective method of remodeling and one that has sone of the best return on investment for your home.
Essential scope of work would roughly include:
Demo & Labor
Supply & install new cabinets
Supply & install new countertops
Supply & install new faucet
Supply & install new sink
Supply & install new tile backsplash
-
This is a project where you like the general walls and structure but want to reimagine pretty much all the finishes in the kitchen.
Standard scope of work would include everything in “Essential” with the addition of the following:
Supply & install LVT flooring
Supply & Install Paint
Minimal electric (add some recessed lights, microwave circuit, new devices)
Minimal plumbing (new valves under sink, new fridge water line, adjusting drain for sink within 3’ of existing)
Minor cabinet layout changes (adding an island, adding a peninsula, taller wall cabinets)
-
This is a project where you want to change pretty much everything in your current kitchen. This includes things like removing walls, moving appliances, adding appliances, changing floor types, adding lighting, etc.
Reimagined Scope of Work included everything in “essential” and “standard,” with the addition of the following:
Tile or hardwood instead of LVT
Moderate electrical (recessed lights, add/move outlets, upgrade appliance plugs, under cabinet lights)
Moderate plumbing (relocation of fridge water line, adding a bar sink, moving sink add GD, upgrading existing plumbing)
Minor HVAC (minor adjustments to supply or return to accommodate new design)
Moderate structural changes or layout changes (widening openings, repairing structure, adding/removing walls, removing soffits, adding beams, replacing windows/doors)
Crown & build up
Cabinet Baseboard
Work transitioning to adjacent rooms (flooring into laundry room or paint in dining room)
The best part is YOU make the decision on the scope of work in your kitchen remodel. You decide how far to go. Granted, there are certain situations where you simply have to add a certain amount of scope to even get started or get the look you want, but you are still in charge of how far to go.
Kitchen size | Essentials | Standard | Reimagined
Compact | $22,500–$33,000 | $33,000–$43,000 | $43,000–$55,000
Standard | $35,000–$52,500 | $50,000–$65,000 | $65,000–$90,000
Large | $50,000–$70,000 | $65,000–$90,000 | $90,000–$125,000
Super-size | $70,000–$110,000 | $110,000–$155,000 | $155,000–$200,000
Side note: Within the scope of work, there are two major items that specifically affect cost: mechanical changes (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) and structural changes.
Here is a narrower price range for your Kitchen remodel using both size and desired scope of work;
-
Selections are defined as: The specific material and finishes you choose for the project.
Selections play a major role in the cost of any remodeling project, not just kitchens. These decisions include things like cabinet brand, countertop color/brand, flooring brand, and many more.
-
One of the most selected faucets by clients at Allura Bath & Kitchen is the Kohler Bellera with a stainless finish. We have one on display in our showroom, in the first kitchen you see when you walk in. Kohler is a great brand with a solid reputation and product line. The Kohler Bellera faucet has all the standard functions, looks great and retails for (at the time of writing) $317.65 on fergusonhome.com.
But you may find that you really love the Kohler Purist in Brushed Bronze, which retails at $677.67 (at time of writing).
OR you might really love the Grohe Blue 2.0 1.75 GPM Single Hole Pull Out Kitchen Faucet and Cooling Unit for Chilled and Sparkling Water, which retails at $3,106.22.
Multiply that difference in possible selections by dozens of selections, and you can see how selections can make or break a project budget quickly.
But fear not! There is a solution:
Consult and utilize a professional, experienced kitchen designer for your project. They will have knowledge of costs and alternatives that you might not be aware of, and able to help guide you in selections that fit your needs and your budget.
This section is harder to make a chart on because everyone has such different tastes.
Selections are a way to move around in the chart above.
Let's assume you are looking at your kitchen and scope of work described above and estimate you're on the lower end of the Large size, standard scope at $65,000. With the right selections, you can probably get that into the Large essentials range or toward the higher end of the current range with other selections.

When talking about cost for certain selections, the main question we receive from homeowners is “How will the cost affect the performance”. Homeowners don't want to go with a lower price product because they don't want to lose the level of performance for the material they are expecting.
The answer is yes; price absolutely has an effect on performance. However, the amount of performance difference between price is what matters and something that is too much to discuss here. This is really crucial, so we wrote an article where you can learn more here.
