Shower Remodel
Pricing & Cost Guide
Shower remodels can come in many different shapes, sizes and materials and with that comes many different prices. The goal of this article is to help demystify shower remodels and empower you with pricing and cost knowledge to help make the right decisions for you and your family.
-
Shower remodels can often also be referred to as “One day showers”, “Tub to shower conversion”, “Wet area remodel” and similar other combinations.
This article addresses the remodeling of the wet area of a bathroom as contained within the bounds of the shower pan or tub, from sub floor to ceiling only.
This is an important distinction from a full bathroom remodel or turnkey bathroom remodel. There are many companies that ONLY provide shower remodels, and some even offer one day installations. Examples include West Shore Bath, Re-bath, Bath fitter, and PJ Fitzpatrick to name a few. Then there are still more companies that will provide full bathroom remodels but can also do just a shower - only remodels.
-
Allura Bath & Kitchen provides full Kitchen and Bath remodeling as well as cabinet design & sales services. We also provide shower conversions, and smaller bath and kitchen projects as well. You can see a full list of services HERE. Allura utilizes Fiberglass remodelers' kits, The Onyx Collection products or tile with schluter waterproofing for our shower remodels. We do not offer an acrylic one-day shower service or material at this time.
The price ranges described below are meant only as a guide, and are not to be taken as a quote or commitment for work. Prices will vary based on location, company, site conditions, selections, etc.

Showers may seem like a project without many options or choices in materials or companies, however these days there are numerous finishes, systems, and companies providing a myriad of different solutions for shower remodels.
When searching for the right shower remodel for you there are 3 main things to consider
Product – What is going to be installed
Company – who is going to install the product
Time – How long to get started (lead time) and how long will it take (project duration)
5 shower products to consider for your remodel
Let's take a look at the 4 most popular shower products and compare them. To try to keep this as “apples to apples” as possible, the pricing in this article will be applied to an existing 60 x 30 tub with a back wall, right wall, left wall, and an 8’ ceiling.
The 4 types of products to consider for your shower are:
Fiberglass remodeler's unit
Vikrell - Vikrell is a solid, durable composite material made from resins, fiberglass, and crushed stone, created exclusively by Kohler
Onyx Shower System
High-grade acrylic shower system
Tile with Schluter or Wedi waterproofing system
Let’s walk through each of these individually and talk about the price, benefits, and downsides of each. We are going to assume no shower doors for any of these pricing comparisons for purposes of keeping this simpler and shorter. Material cost for a fiberglass remodeler's unit is going to run around 800- 1,200 on the low end to as high as 1,500-3,000 on the higher end. VERIFY
Additional materials will be needed for the project, such as a mixing valve, shower head, grab bars, setting materials, curtain rod, and other construction-related items necessary for the installation. These are going to be in the range of 1,500 – 2,500.
If you are DIYing the project yourself, and you have all the tools necessary, then the material is going to be about all you need except your time. So for a DIY fiberglass or Vikrell unit, a good budget would be $3,000 – 5,500.
Professional labor to do all the labor from demo to final touches is going to be between $2,400 and $4,000 depending on existing structure/plumbing and scope of the accessories and options included.
A fiberglass remodeler's unit is going to cost somewhere around $5,400 – $10,000 to have professionally installed material and the full project cost.
Keep in mind that these fiberglass units are easy to purchase from most of the big supply houses such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Ferguson. The downside is that they are pre-molded to standard sizes. This means that if you have a custom-size shower or have a shower that doesn't fit the predetermined shapes they supply, then this option won't work for your application. The benefit is that if you have a standard size, then material and installation are designed to be quick and cost-effective. In our experience, we find that the useful life of a fiberglass or Vikrell unit tends to be on average around 15 years; however, with great care and maintenance, these units can last longer. The biggest downside to these units is damage like holes and cracks. The material is very difficult, if not borderline impossible, to repair and keep waterproof.

Sterling Vikrell Shower remodelers unit
Vikrell is basically a stronger, more resilient fiberglass that is designed to be sturdier and more robust than traditional fiberglass. It was designed due to the existing issues with true fiberglass showers. It’s a proprietary material made by Kohler in their “Sterling” line.
-
The Onyx Collection is a shower system that is made of 67% Alumina trihydrate and 37% of a proprietary polyester resin developed by Onyx. This product is very similar to Corian (Dupont countertop product popular in the 80’s and 90’s) and cultured marble. It is designed to have the right mix of flexibility and durability while also being waterproof.
Materials for a 60x30 shower pan and wall surround cost around $2,800 - $3,800, depending on accessories and custom options. SEE ONYX INSIGHTS ARTICLE
Additional materials will be needed for the project such as mixing valve, shower head, grab bars, setting materials, curtain rod and other construction related items necessary for the installation. These are going to be in the range of $1,500 – $2,500.
Professional labor to do all the labor from demo to final touches is going to be between $4,000 and $5,000.
DIY price = 4.3K - 6.3K + your time and tools
Professional install price = $8.3K + 11.3K
Onyx does have standard sizes just like the fiberglass/vikrell units, but they also allow for fully customizable pan and wall sizes (up to a certain size). Onyx does not stock materials, so everything is made to order specific for your bathroom. So the pro is that you can get whatever size you need or desire for your bathroom but the downside is the lead time to get the materials is 6 weeks. Another major benefit of Onyx is that all the colors and patterns are the same price. There is no “upgrade price” for the color you want. They have 50-some colors and 5 different textures to choose from, making it very customizable for your design style.

Acrylic is the same type of material you see used to make fish tanks and is a strong thermoplastic polymer. The benefit is that it is extremely durable, lightweight, and moldable.
You can find Acrylic kits at Home Depot like this; however, I could not recommend or advise on them, as we have never purchased or installed them. This section will primarily deal with high-grade acrylic shower remodels performed by a “One-day” shower remodeling company such as West Shore, Re-Bath, or PJ Fitzpatrick, to name a few.
High-grade acrylic one-day shower remodels are not something that AlluraBath 7 Kitchen provides as a service. Many of the other companies mentioned have their own manufacturing facilities for the acrylic and are set up much differently than us. The pricing provided is a real-life example from one of those companies with real pricing for a shower.
High-grade acrylic one-day shower remodels from one of the companies mentioned above, or a similar company, are going to cost between 13,000 and 22,000
One interesting thing to note is that the pricing mainly varies based on when you accept their price. You can expect them to measure the space, show you options and possible upgrades, and then present you with a price right there at the first meeting. That first price will be the highest price they give you and will probably be presented as the “good for 1 year price”. Next, they will generally offer a “1 week price” (or something similar) that is substantially cheaper. Finally, they will give you the “today” price that's even cheaper.
Here is an example of how a High-Grade acrylic one-day shower price would be presented to you
One-year price: 18,481
One-week price: 14,981
Today price: 13,481
Between those three prices, there was NO change in the size, scope, or selections of the project. Exactly the same offer but vastly different prices based on when you sign the agreement.
One of the biggest benefits of the acrylic system from one of these companies is speed. These companies can get them done fast while still providing high-quality work. These are companies that are specialized professionals. A company like Westgate ONLY does showers. They are highly rated, with thousands of reviews, strict training programs, high customer satisfaction, and overall a very solid company. They do literally thousands every day and, on average, are going to get the project completed in 25 days from signing the contract, and pretty much always a 1-day install. The acrylic is also a very durable product. Borderline indestructible. Multiple color options and customizable options to go with it.
